The Right Reasons 18: Revelations "Mac!" Harm cried out. He knelt beside her, cradling her head in his lap. "Sturgis, call 9-1-1," he instructed, terrified for her and the new life inside her. "Harm, she just fainted," Sturgis said. "Give her some air, and I'm certain she'll come to." "You don't understand," and Harm's voice thickened with worry. "She's pregnant." "What?!" Webb and Sturgis exclaimed at the same time. "Yes, pregnant. So, please will you call an ambulance?" Sturgis didn't question him any further, but pulled out a cell phone and called 9-1-1, explaining the situation to the operator. He flipped the phone shut and told them, "The ambulance is on the way." He wanted to ask Harm more, but he knew now wasn't the time. "Let's get her out of the elevator," Sturgis suggested. Harm picked Mac up and started carrying her towards the bench in the hallway. Before he got there, she began to regain consciousness. Not wanting to cause another scene, Webb slipped back into the bullpen, out of Mac's sight. "What ... happened?" Mac murmured as Harm set her down on the bench. "You fainted," Harm told her. "The ambulance will be here shortly." Mac tried to sit up. "I don't need-" "I don't want to take any chances." Harm was insistent. "Oh my God," Mac said. "What?" Harm asked, worried. "I saw Webb." She looked up at him. "He was coming out of the bullpen." "Yes, you did. We'll talk about it after you get checked out." Just then, the EMTs came out of the elevator. Although she seemed to be okay, they decided to take her to the hospital as a precaution. Later Monday Afternoon Bethesda Naval Hospital Harm was waiting outside of Mac's room when Sturgis found him. "How is she?" he asked. "The doctor's in there right now." "So, Mac's pregnant," Sturgis began. "Weren't you two supposed to tell me before anything happened?" Harm reddened. "Well, it wasn't exactly planned. We didn't think we'd be able to, you know, without the surgery." Sturgis snickered. "So you didn't use any protection?" "No," and Harm changed the subject, "So. Webb didn't die. What was he doing at JAG? He's not suckering Mac into another undercover assignment." Sturgis shook his head. "It's not that. I'll explain as much as I know to both of you." The door opened and the doctor came out. "Commander?" Harm stopped him. "How is ...?" "The Colonel is fine. She just needs rest," he told them. "She'll stay here tonight for observation. You can go in and see her. Just remember, visiting hours are until 2000 hours." "Thank you." Harm pulled Sturgis in with him. "Hi, Mac, how are you feeling?" "Fine. A little tired, maybe. And still in shock." Mac looked at Sturgis. "I assume you're here to fill us in on Webb's non-death?" "A little." Sturgis sat down in the chair, while Harm sat on the foot of Mac's bed. "I was as shocked as you, Mac, to see Webb in my office today." "Really?" Mac asked dryly. "All right, maybe not quite as shocked, but pretty close. Anyway, it seems Webb faked his death to catch Sadik Fahd's number two man, as well as some dirty CIA employees." "So, why is he coming out of hiding now?" Harm said. "They've got their men in custody. There will be a tribunal and Webb almost definitely will be called on to testify. There's probably more to that story, but I'll let him tell you himself. "He came by today to give me a heads up so I could prepare both of you. Unfortunately, you spoiled things by coming back from lunch early. But enough about Webb. I understand you have some happy news to share." "Yes, we just found out this morning," Mac told him. "We were on our way to your office so we discuss plans and options when ..." "When you're back in the office, we can talk about that." Sturgis got up. "I'm going to head home now and let you two have some privacy. And Mac, I don't expect to see you before Wednesday." Mac thanked him and he left them alone in the room. "When you passed out in the elevator, Mac, I was so scared," Harm said in a voice that was nearly a whisper. She smiled at him. "I'm fine, Harm. You don't have to worry about me." "I can't help it." Mac yawned. "I'm sorry, Harm, but I am really bushed. I think I might just go to sleep." "Of course. I'll come by in the morning and take you back to your apartment. Good night, sweetheart." He leaned in to kiss her good-bye. "Good night, Harm." Mac burrowed into the pillow as he turned out the lights. As he walked out of the hospital, Harm thought about the day's revelations. Mac's pregnancy. Webb's resurrection from the dead. Not a typical Monday morning. |
