Harm turned on his computer. Even if they couldn't confirm why Petty Officer Simpson had the prescription, a little research on the Internet should tell them what Symbyax was meant for.
A few minutes on WebMD.com and Harm had his answer. "Symbyax is prescribed for treating depression associated with bipolar disorder."
"So the petty officer was a manic-depressive?"
"It appears that way. And she wasn't taking her medications."
"A risky move."
"And it proved fatal for her."
"But why?"
Harm held up a key ring. "I don't know yet, but maybe something in her apartment can tell us."
"What about the NCIS investigator? Wouldn't they have already gone there and looked over everything?" Mac asked Harm.
He snorted. "Probably not. The investigator had too many real crimes to bother looking over this one. It pisses me off. Doesn't he realize that the victim's family and coworkers deserve some answers?"
Trying to calm Harm down, Mac replied softly, "In his defense, I guess he thought things were open-and-shut. And on the surface, they are. She killed herself by hanging. Understanding why is another thing altogether." She laid a hand on his. "And that's why we're looking into it."
Harm squeezed her hand. "I know. So when do we want to go over the Petty Officer's place?"
Mac yawned. "Not tonight. I'm bushed. I didn't know I was going to be working late tonight."
Harm was instantly apologetic. "I didn't realize how late it was. Why don't you go on home, and I'll clean things up?"
She refused. "No. We'll both clean up and I'll stay until you're asleep. That way I know you don't stay up all night working after shooing me home. You're not doing your other clients any justice by being exhausted, you know."
Harm nodded in agreement. He was tired, now that she mentioned it, although he'd never admit it to Mac.
They picked up, sorting the box of personal effects into what they had and had not looked at. Harm rifled through his desk and found a folder to put their notes in and put the keys by the door. "Maybe we can go there tomorrow after work," Harm commented.
"Works for me. I've got nothing better to do on a Friday night." Harm raised an eyebrow at her. She told him, "I wasn't joking, Harm. Really, I don't have anything else."
"I really appreciate you helping out tonight, Mac," Harm thanked her.
"Don't think you're getting rid of me yet." She pointed to his bedroom. "Get changed. I meant what I said about making sure you're asleep."
Harm smiled sheepishly. She knew him too well. "And if I don't obey?"
"Do you want me to make you?" She strode up until they were inches apart.
Harm kept grinning. "Maybe." His grin turned into a grimace of pain as Mac twisted his arm behind his back and pushed him ahead of her into the bedroom.
"Ouch!" he shouted and she let go.
"You're the one who decided to test me, remember?" she teased, with a wicked smile on her face.
He moved closer to her. "I won't make that mistake again," he said softly.
Their bodies leaned closer together until their lips were nearly touching. "Smart man," Mac replied before Harm kissed her.
They'd kissed a few times over the past several years, but none of them came close to this one. Mac's knees wobbled and she fell against Harm, knocking him onto the bed.
Afterward, they lay nestled together under the blankets.
"Do you have to go?" Harm asked softly.
"I can't," she said simply.
Puzzled, Harm asked her why.
She chuckled and said, "You're still not asleep. I told you I wasn't leaving until you're asleep for the night." She snuggled against his chest and turned off the light.
