Midnight Sunday

JAG Headquarters

A young woman in a petty officer's uniform sat at her desk.  She appeared to be hard at work, except for one detail.  Tears fell from her face and dripped onto the notepad she was writing on.

She didn't bother to wipe them away, just continued scribbling on the page.  Finally she was done.  She taped the note to her computer and then walked to the center of the bullpen.

She looped a rope around the pipes running across the ceiling.  She stood on a chair and tied the other end around her neck.  Tears still streaming from her face, she jumped off the chair.

Monday Morning

JAG Headquarters

Harm pulled into the parking lot.  He was impressed to see he was the first one in. Even beat Mac in today, he thought to himself.

Whistling, he walked out of the elevator and opening the door to the bullpen, he walked into Hell.

The young woman was hanging lifelessly from a rope tied to the pipework.  He ran to her side and lifted her up to take the weight off the rope, even though he knew it was hopeless.  He frantically dialed 911 and called for an ambulance.

As soon as he hung up, he struggled to loosen the knot around her neck.  He finally succeeded, and lay the girl down on the floor.  Hands trembling, he felt for a pulse in her wrist, then her neck.  There was nothing.  Not able to give up yet, he put her head back and began administering CPR.

He continued this for what seemed like hours, until the paramedics arrived.  They checked her over quickly, and turned to Harm.

"I'm sorry, sir.  She's dead."

Harm started trembling and his legs went out from under him.  The paramedics moved to his side.  "Are you all right, sir?"

He shook them off. "I'm fine." He got himself upright and sat in a chair.  The paramedics called NCIS in and they began the task of investigating the scene.

He was still sitting there when his cell phone rang.  It was Mac.  "Rabb," he said lifelessly.

"Harm?  Where are you?" Her anxiety vibrated through the phone. "I pull in the parking lot, see your car and they've got crime scene tape blocking the entrance to the bullpen.  I was thinking the worst ..." Her voice trailed off.

"I'm all right." That wasn't entirely the truth, but physically, he was unharmed.  It would take him a while to erase the image of the woman dangling from the rope in the bullpen.

"So what happened?"

"Petty Officer ... uh ..." and Harm realized he didn't even know her name.  She'd been at JAG for two years and he'd never bothered to find out that piece of information, "hold on." He covered the receiver with his hand and asked the paramedic, "What's the name on her uniform?"

"Simpson, sir."

"Petty Officer Simpson hung herself in the bullpen."

Mac exclaimed, "How awful!"

Harm agreed. "I walked in this morning and there she was." He shuddered at the memory of that moment. "Did you know the Petty Officer at all?"

"Not well enough to pick her out of a crowd.  You?"

"Before today, I would have said the same.  Now, it's a different story." Harm's voice sounded haunted. "I don't think I'll ever be able to forget her face."
